PURPOSE: The
purpose of the United States Sign Council (USSC) Scholarship
Program is to provide financial awards to employees or children
of employees of USSC member firms. Preference will be given
to students who intend to pursue studies related to the sign
industry i.e. graphic arts, studio arts, design, architecture
or advertising. It is the desire of the USSC to promote excellence
inour industry by encouraging the young, bright and talented
to further their studies.
SELECTION
PROCESS: Scholarship
applications will be evaluated on the basis of academic
achievement, honors (including art related awards,
contests or prizes), school and community leadership
activities, education, graphic design potential and
career goals. Selection will be made by the USSC education
committee. USSC shall have the right to interpret,
modify or discontinue this scholarship award program
at the discretion of the full board.
AWARDS: USSC
will award up to three (3) $1,000.00 annually renewable
scholarships each calendar year. Under the program, and
subject to the renewal eligibility rules, a recipient would
be eligible to receive a maximum of $4,000.00 over four
(4) consecutive years. Student must submit proof of continued
enrollment for not more than 4 consecutive calendar years
to continue receiving the scholarship. Awards are made
payable to the college, university or trade school directly.
APPLICATION: Student
applicants are responsible for gathering and submitting
all information and forms necessary for the selection of
scholarship recipients. High school transcripts must be
signed by the guidance counselor and the application must
be signed by the parent/guardian (if applicant is 18 or
under) and student. Applications must be postmarked by
April 1. Recipients will be notified by May 30. Students
renewing an award must submit transcripts by May 30 following
the funded year.
ELIGIBILITY: To
be eligible for the USSC scholarship, a student must comply
with the following requirements:
- Be
an employee or dependent of an employee of a USSC member
firm during the year of application for the scholarship
- Graduate
from a public or private secondary school during the
school year of the award (i.e., Spring 2003 for the 2003
Award), or currently attending an accredited college,
university or trade school as an undergraduate.
- Have
been accepted or anticipates being accepted at an accredited
two year or four year collage or university, or an accredited
two year trade school
- Have
a grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.5 (where 4.0
is the maximum) at the time of applying and complete
either the S.A.T. or A.C.T. exam. (Foreign students will
be responsible for providing secondary school transcripts
and standardized test information in English including
their percentile rankings among college-bound students)
- Submit
between eight and ten 35mm slides of art, graphic, 3-dimensional
or photographic works. Each slide should be accompanied
by a written description including date of completion,
size of work and medium or media used.
- Submit
a transcript of high school course work plus transcripts
of completed undergraduate course work if currently enrolled
in college, university or trade school.
- Submit
scores from S.A.T. or A.C.T. exam signed by the school
guidance officer
- Complete
all parts of the application including the required essay,
transcript and signatures
- All
submitted items and forms are to be postmarked no later
than April 1
- Incomplete
or late applications will not be considered
- Children
of USSC Board of Directors are not eligible to apply
ELIGIBILITY
FOR RENEWAL: The
$1,000.00 Scholarship Award is annually renewable
for up to three additional years of continuous
undergraduate study and must be re-applied for
with the following information sent to the USSC
Executive Office by May 30 of each year:
- Transcript
of course work completed showing
at least a grade point average (GPA)
of 3.0, where 4.0 is the maximum
- Student
must maintain full time student status
of at least 12 credit hours per semester
or more
- Student
must maintain status as an employee
or dependent child of an employee
of a USSC member firm
- The
renewal committee may consider extenuating
circumstances

from any aspect of this application
or this scholarship award program.
By signing the application, the
applicant and parent(s) or guardian(s)
agrees that he/she is aware of
and understands all rules, conditions,
instructions and provisions regarding
all aspects of this scholarship
award program; and, applicant
agrees to accept the decisionof
the USSC Education Committee
without debate. All submitted
forms, transcripts, essays, information
and slides become the property
of the United States Sign Council
and will not be returned to applicant.
